To Go or Not to Go...

Since before Blake and I got married (on July 11, 2009-almost a YEAR!! crazy...) we have both always wanted to move out west for a while before we settle down and have kids to see if we'd rather live out there for the rest of our lives, or live in the south.

So for the past 3 months we have been trying to decide when to pick up and go. I love my job here in Columbia working at an insurance company, and Blake has to finish his internship at an assisted living to graduate in August. So with that said, the earliest we could leave would be around Sept. 5th.

On our way home from Greenville on Sunday we said, "Ok it's a done deal, we're moving in September" so we decided to tell our jobs that our last day would be August 31st.

The next day I went to work, told my supervisor our plans, and explained I would be leaving August 31st. Blake did the same...only his outcome went a little something like this...

The marketing director actually came up to him and asked him when he was done with his internship whether he would like to stay on as Director of Events or switch to the Marketing department. First of all...we didn't know this was an option?? Secondly, we thought to ourselves, "is this God opening a new door and closing another like we prayed for the night before?"

So now we're in a dilemma.

Do we stay and take the safe route for now, put off our plans for a bit and figure out the next step later, or do we leave everything behind and just go?

Well, we don't know the answer to that just yet...of course the popular choice is for everyone to say "Just go, you're young, have fun!" which is popular with me too, but we just want to make sure it's the SMART choice...you know, since we are in a recession and jobs and money are a bit more scarce than ususal :)

So we're in the process of weighing out the pros and cons. I'll start by saying I have many more Pros than cons, but I do have one very big CON, and that is...SNOW. Before you start judging me, let me just assure you I'm not talking about this kind of snow...

Joyful. Blissful. FUN snow.

No no no...I'm talking about THIS kind of snow...

The kind where my dreams of this...

Turn into something like this...

And this adventure...

Turns into THIS adventure...

Brrrrrrrrr...No thank you.
You see...I want the chance to experience the outdoors, go to the farmer's markets and walk everywhere around town simply enjoying being alone with Blake, but I realize you have to take the bad with the good. So with that said...maybe November through February in Boulder will resemble more along the lines of this...
And I'll cope and get by like this...

  1. This makes me happy (and a tad bit jealous). Scott and I were so hoping he would find a job out in Denver. We've always wanted to live around the Colorado, Utah, Nevada area for a little while. But, we both love snow. I can understand you not being 100% thrilled with all of the snow, but I think you might like it more than you think. I just spent my first winter in an area that tends to get pounded with lake effect snow. This winter was actually a mild one, but I loved every minute of it! You just have to learn how to dress for it! :)

I can also completely understand your reservations about dropping everything and heading out west in this economy. We recently had to let go of the safety net the Army provided us and dive head first and it was more than scary. In fact we had $80 to our name when we finally found our apartment up here. I'm not going to lie and tell you it was easy, but if it's meant to be, you will find a way and it will all work out.

I would research job opportunities out there and cost of living. Really do your footwork and then pray and trust that God will really let you know where you are supposed to end up. I can't wait to hear how it all works out!

  3. Well...since neither choice is in G'ville...I say go for it! I wish we'd had a chance to make more adventurous memories pre-kids. You know, other than the Edge and youth trips ;). I'll just live vicariously through you!

Also, interestingly, we spent some time this winter with friends from G'ville who now live in Denver. They said that the cold feels colder here than there bc the air is so much drier there or something. And remember, those places are way better equipped to handle snow than we are, so you don't get stuck in your house for days like we do here. Praying for your decision!
